Film Review: Todo el Poder

by Fernando Sarinana in Spanish with English subtitles.

Apparently inspired by Sarinana’s own experiences in Mexico City, this film tells the story of a filmmaker, Gabriel, who continues to be mugged. In this case, however, the police are no help, because the police are the “bad guys.” One of the bad guys is police chief, Elvis Quijano, a man obsessed with Elvis Presley,  women, drugs, and power.

When Gabriel’s ex-wife’s SUV is stolen at a party where the party-goers are forced to disrobe, Gabriel has had too much and sets out to recover the car. In the process, he meets several people, including a young woman who is an aspiring actress while working as an (unsuccessful) insurance agent. He is also helped by his young, bright, and charming 13 year old daughter.

During this period, in which violence and mugging are endemic in Mexico, it is rare for there to be a film in which the good guys triumph. "Todo el Poder" is such a film.

Highly recommended for discussion for advanced levels.
